Does TB affect the bones?

Did you know that Tuberculosis (TB) can affect various parts of the body other than the lungs?

In Orthopaedics, we often encounter cases of skeletal TB, which affects the bones and joints, including the spine. This condition typically manifests several months to years after exposure to TB, either from having pulmonary TB (lung TB) or being in contact with someone with TB.

While signs on X-ray or MRI can suggest the presence of skeletal TB, the definitive diagnosis is made through a biopsy of the affected joint or bone. This sample is then cultured and assessed by a pathologist.

Fortunately, treatment is available. Unlike pulmonary TB, which is typically treated for 6 months, skeletal TB requires a longer treatment duration of 12 months as per local guidelines.

If you have had pulmonary TB or have been exposed to a TB patient, it’s crucial to inform your primary care doctor or orthopaedic specialist. They can then screen for potential skeletal TB.
