Since it was established in 1915, AIC Kijabe Hospital has continued to experience tremendous growth and change over the years. The hospital is currently a refferal equipped with nine new operating theater rooms, a modern ICU, Dental, Laboratory and Pathology units. Along side quality healthcare, we have projects such as Bethany Kids at Kijabe Hospital (BKKH) for children, AIDSRelief Project for  free HIV/AIDS care, the development of Naivasha Medical Centre and Marira Clinic that have been realized.

As the first hospital at Kijabe mission station, located 5 Kms from the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, AIC Kijabe Hospital, formerly known as Theodora Hospital, served the medical needs of the area until 1957, when church leaders sensed a need for a referral medical centre. In 1961, the first building of the present complex was erected and opened with a 65-bed capacity and a small surgical unit. By 1969, the second building, which included a 30-bed maternity unit, 3 private rooms, and a well designed and equipped theatre, was finished.

In 1968, another building project was begun to fulfill government requirements for a school for enrolled community nurses. In 1970, a dormitory was completed for housing 48 students. In 1977, the German National Church agreed to fund a project to double the bed capacity of the hospital, and by 1980 the majority of the building was completed.

There is a three and a half year community nurse training program that began in 1980, the same year that President Moi officially opened the new outpatient building. In 1991, the dental department began a two-year program for training Kenyan dentists. The most recent initiative which began in 1995 involves training Christian Kenyan doctors in a new Intern Training Program.

A Board of Governors was established in 1972, and since then Kijabe Hospital has been a church rather than a mission hospital. It is operated by the Africa Inland Church (AIC) as part of a network of four hospitals and forty-five dispensaries located throughout Kenya. The purpose of said network is to glorify God through medical ministry. The institutional objectives are excellence in medical care, training in medical professions, and the spiritual care of patients, staff, and students.

As the hospital has expanded, the town has built up around it now making Kijabe Mission Station and Kijabe town one and the same. The hospital does more than serve the local population though, as Kijabe serves people from throughout Kenya while continuing to emphasize its commitment to the impoverished.

Kijabe Hospital is now a fully equipped hospital providing all general hospital services. Medical services have significantly improved and expanded with the hospital’s growth, which now boasts one of the most comprehensive healthcare services in the country.
