In association with Bethany Crippled Children’s Centre of Kenya (BCCCK), a small, independent facility located adjacent to KH, BethanyKids at Kijabe Hospital (BKKH) personnel continue to visit clinics in Kisumu, Nakuru and Port Rietz, which are under the direction of the Association of Physically Disabled of Kenya. Mobile clinics are also held in Embu, Machakos, Eldoret, Kitale, Nairobi and the Kakuma Refugee Camp. BKKH staff also visit Joytown Special School, Dadaab Refugee Camp and Lamu on a regular basis. Camps are home to over 200,000 refugees. Most of these Sudanese, Somalis and Ethiopians have never had access to care for the disabled nor heard the Gospel. The people of Lamu and long the Kenyan coast are mainly Muslim and never had a meaningful presentation of the Gospel. While historically 80% of new disabled patients were first identified out in the mobile clinics, recent figures show that over 50% are now referred directly to BCCCK and BKKH.
Education is an important element for both staff and parents of disabled children. Teaching modules in paediatric nursing are introduced every 3 months. Plans have been developed to train physicians in the surgical treatment of disabilities. Bethany Media has produced and shows teaching videos about hydrocephalus, spina bifida, cleft lips and other disabilities to parents in order to help them understand these disabilities.
