“Mission hospital's provide up to 40 per cent of health care
nationwide. We would like the government to include faith based hospitals in their health budget.”
says the hospital’s Executive Director Justus Marete.

“In terms of the Ministry of Health’s grading Kijabe Hospital is above provincial hospitals and below the national teaching and referral hospitals that is Kenyatta National Hospital
and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital,” says the hospital’s Executive Director Justus Marete. The 93-year-old hospital is located in Kijabe Town at the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment in Lari Division of Kiambu District. It has two satellite clinics in Marira and Naivasha. “In our Marira Clinic, we dug a 180 metre water borehole and soon realized that we had more than enough water for us. We are currently providing water to 50 homes around the clinic at a small fee,” Marete says. The speciality departments at the hospital include general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, palliative care, urology, paediatric neurosurgery, HIV/Aids, and Dental care. “We have two specialized clinics for diabetic patients and those with TB,” the hospital’s director adds. The stateof- the-art dental clinic is used for complicated dental procedures and as a training facility. “We have a five-bed intensive care unit, a room that serves as an isolation unit for patients with infectious diseases, and two ambulances for emergency service.” Though the hospital does not have an MRI or CT scan, we have digitised our pathology department and we are in the process of automating all other departments. “We provide tissue diagnostic services to 40 mission hospitals and we often send them the results quickly via email and also by hard copy,” Marete says. Even more interesting is our telescopic link between laboratories here in Kenya and the United States, which we have had for the last three years. “We acquired the telepathology system in 2004. It consists of a microscope, a camera specifically designed to be used on a camera, a computer and software to allow the editing of picture files,” says Marete. Through it, the pathologist is able to consult with his/her peers in the US and other parts of the world. “This facility gives us a degree of security that the slide is indicative of this or that disease." The images can also be projected as a slideshow for training purposes.
